Ingoldmells Academy

Seals Class Home Learning

Monday 20th July

Dear Seals,

When I started posting our daily challenges on here in March I never imagined that I would still be posting these challenges in July!

Through out this lockdown, I have come to know you all so well. I have appreciated our chats every week, your posts on facebook and how you have all taken on not only some of our daily challenges, but some life skill challenges of your own from gardening to baking and much more.

I hope  this experience has reinforced your belonging to the Ingoldmells Academy family during what has been and, in some ways, continues to be an extraordinary time. It has been my pleasure and privilege to have experienced this time with you.

So, in this last lockdown challenge post, all that is left for me to do is say a huge thankyou and post your last challenge...

Today's challenge is YOU:

Happy Holidays! Keep safe.

Ok, today's Challenge is English:

I would like you to use the information from the text to answer the questions...

Rumpelstiltskin

Once upon a time, there lived a shepherd and his daughter. One day as  the girl sat spinning, the king came riding by. "What fine wool you spin!" he said.

"Oh! Thats nothing" boasted the shepherd. "My daughter is so clever that she can even spin straw into gold."

"Straw into gold!" cried the king. "Bring her at once to the royal palace! If she can spin straw into gold I shall make her my queen."

That night the king led the girl to a small room filled with straw. "Spin this straw into gold by morning." commanded the king. Then he locked the door and went away.

The shepherd's daughter began to cry, because she knew she could not spin straw into gold. Then suddenly she heard a sound, and a little man appeared.

"I can spin straw into gold." said the little man. "Give me your necklace and I will do it for you."

"Oh, thankyou, thankyou!" said the girl. The little man took the necklace and he began to spin.

By morning the room was full of glittering gold. When the king saw the gold he was amazed. "Tonight you wil spin even more!" he commanded.

  1. Where did the king tell the shepherd to take his daughter?
  2. What did the king do to the door before he went away?
  3. Why did the girl sob?
  4. What did the girl hear?
  5. What did the girl give the little man?

Bonjour mes enfant! Ca va?

I have some really great news...We have our own SEALS facebook group! Go to the school facebook page, scroll across to groups, click and then click on SEALS class.

How did the quiz go? Did you play against your family? I played against mine! My sister won the quiz with a score of 42. It was fun doing the quiz together, we all had snacks ready and played it online through Skype. Post your scores on the SEALS facebook group page.

The next three days Challenge is Music:

  1. Look at the lyrics of the song and answer the question I have set for you.
  2. With your adults permission, go on the youtube link and learn the song.
  3. Ask an adult to film you performing the song (you may like to add some dance moves) and post it on our class facebook page.

BE BRAVE AND PROUD.

'This is Me' is a song empowering those people who are ostracised by society for being different. It's a song about being brave and being seen for who you are and being proud of that. If you have seen the film, you will remember in the scene after Jenny Lind's performance, there is an after party that the circus troupe attempts to attend, but when they ask to join, Barnum reveals his shame at being associated  with them in the midst of his new rich company.

 Questions

  1. What is the meaning of ostracised?
  2. What does it mean to be a stranger in the dark?
  3. Who are 'they' mentioned in the second line?
  4. What punctuation has been used to show speech?
  5. What are her broken parts?
  6. Can these be fixed?
  7. What does the word ashamed mean?
  8. What are her scars?
  9. Why has she used the word scars?
  10. On a scale of 1-5, how effective is the word glorious?

Have a good day and remember to get your daily exercise.

Buongiorno bambini!

How did you get on with your design yesterday?

My log in for the school Twitter came yesterday; so I going to tweet today with some photos of what we have been doing.

Ok, lets carry on with our Outside the box challenge today:

Yesterday, hopefully you were able to complete the first part of the challenge and are ready for the second part today...TV adverts.

  1. With a member of your family, discuss how TV adverts might persuade people to buy the product e.g. by...
  • promoting how 'healthy' and delicious the cereal is
  • persuading people that this cereal is a great way to start the day
  • linking the cereal to cartoon characters so the children pester their parents/carers to buy it
  • telling parents/carers how much their child (even fussy ones) will love the cereal
  •  exaggerating what makes the cereal different from all the others.
  •  giving a free gift away with the cereal
  •  explaining what good value for money the cereal is

      2. Create your TV advert - use the persuasive language sheet below to help you.

      3. Act out your TV advert and practise it a few times so it is the same each time you perform it.

      4. Ask your adult to film your advert on their phone.

In the next couple of days, we will have a school facebook page where you can post your adverts! I cant wait to see them.

Have a great day Seals! Make sure to get some exercise.

Friday 27th March 2020

Good Morning Seals!

As promised here is a photo of the treasure I collected on the beach yesterday (I don't have a garden) and a photo of my den. Hope you all managed to do your Roman numeral task yesterday too.

Today's Challenge is History:

Because we live in a seaside area and have our own Butlins, I thought it would be fun to look at the history of Butlins and the seaside holiday.

Background Information

Seals you may find this hard to believe, but there was a time when people didn't have a holiday and didn't go to the seaside and definitely not abroad. The fashion for taking a seaside holiday came in the 18th century when a Dr Richard Russell suggested wrote an article in a national newspaper suggesting that sea water was good for your health. Then in the 19th century, more factories were opening and so more people had money to visit the sea for a holiday by train; as most people didn't own cars.

But where to stay? Most people stayed in Guest Houses, however, these locked the people out during the day! Then a man named William Butlin had an idea... In 1936 he opened his first holiday camp in Skegness, Lincolnshire. The aim was to offer a place of fun and relaxation for all the family. It was an immediate success! Between 1937 and 1972,  another eight holiday camps were opened around the United Kingdom.

Activity 1:

As you look at the photos and descriptions below discuss, with an adult in your house, all the different types of entertainments and facilities that you can see.

Have a lovely day Seals!

Saturday 21st March 2020

Hi Seals,

At the moment, we all have to stay apart until things get better... and they will. Then we will come back together again and look after each other even better than before.

Everyone is worried at the minute about this virus which  is making some people ill. Doctors and nurses are trying so hard to make people better and to find a cure and no doubt they will. The government (Boris Johnson and all his team) think that they will do this quicker if we all socially distance and stay apart for a while. We can do this! Remember, you are in control of you so listen to your family, be kind and tell someone if you are worried. I understand that this is going to be hard and I'm here to help.

Ok so lets have some fun...

As of Monday, I will post you a daily challenge to do along side your daily diary entry (very important), times tables and one task from your home pack.

Your Weekend Challenge:

Do something special tomorrow, on Mothering Sunday, (a thankyou with a big smile) for your mum or the person that looks after you.

Happy Weekend

With love

Mrs Adams 2 x

We have had great fun building Stonehenge using biscuits!

The Seals Class have been exploring the Stone Age. Out into the woods we went to try our hand at cave painting. We used charcoal/ash and just a little bit of black paint.
