First the Naughty Bus went in the school bag.  After that it raced into the fridge.  Think about the order where the bus went and making sure that you start each sentence with a capital letter and finish them with a full stop.  You can use the sound card from your home learning pack to help you sound out each word.

We will need a selection of toy cars this morning and a ruler and string. Today we are going to see which car will travel the longest distance, we will need to, place the cars at the start line that you can make with the string, so it’s fair. First push the car along the track. How far has it travelled? Look at where it stopped.  Put a marker down, that could be another bit of string or tape, to help you remember how far the car has travelled.  Repeat with the other cars.  Using your ruler, see how many rulers lengths the cars have travelled.  Write the number of rulers they’ve travelled on the marker to show where they stopped.  Compare distances the cars have travelled …Which travelled the greatest/ least distance?  Try and use the words greatest and least to describe the distance that the cars travel.

Have fun with your measuring!

Writing Focus

Listen to the story of You Can’t Take An Elephant on a Bus https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N9_AO-kUcmk .  This time we are going to think about rhyming words. Listen really carefully and see if you can hear all the rhyming words.  Can you hear them?  Remember rhyming words have the same sound in the middle and end, like cat, rat, mat.  Can you continue my rhyming string?  If you’ve been a super star at hearing the rhyme, try and make up your own funny rhyming sentence about vehicles!  E.g. An ant can’t ride on a bus because with tiny legs it would cause a terrible fuss. It rhymes bus and fuss.

Maths

Look at a selection of different containers. Discuss which might hold the greatest amount of water and which the least amount of water.  Pick a container and measure how many cups of water you need to pour into it to make it full, a funnel will make it much easier.  To make it more interesting you can add food colouring to the water. Describe the water level e.g. half full, nearly full, half empty etc.  When you’ve measured how many cups each container holds, place all the containers back in a row, can you order them from the most to the least amount of cups?

Look at how the same amount of water looks in the different containers! Why is the water level higher in this container?

Creative

We are going to look at a Van Gogh painting of a boat, following our theme of transport this week.  Draw an outline of the boat on a piece of paper.  The choose two contrasting colours to paint the hull of your boat.  Try and stay carefully inside the lines.  Using a different colour paint the mast.  Look really closely at the sea that the boat is resting on, it is made up of lots of tiny sections of different colours.  Very carefully using a thin brush paint tiny sections of the sea, blue, green, yellow and a few to reflect the colours you’ve painted the boat.

Think about different types of transport e.g. car, train, boat, bicycle, taxis, motorbike.  Discuss specialised forms of transport, e.g. ambulance, lifeboat, mobility scooter. Can you think of different ways to group the vehicles. Consider reasons for travelling in each- like travelling quickly, or travelling in a big group.

Look at the illustrations and amusing scenarios. Can you talk about your favourite part of the book/scenario and to use because to provide a reason for your opinion, e.g. a whale riding a bike because it is funny to see something so big on something so small! Come up with your own funny suggestions, e.g. A caterpillar can’t ride in a canoe or A seagull can’t trot on a horse.  Remember to use capital letters and full stops.

This week we will be thinking about capacity!  using a bowl of water or sand we are going to explore empty, full, nearly empty, nearly full, and half full.  It's best to use clear containers so that you can see how much is in the container.  Use a few different sizes of containers, can you put them into order of how full they are? It needs to keep the water out and float.  Can you predict from a range of objects which would be the best for making a boat out of?  Explore floating and sinking in a water tray, and making your own boats.

Or make a target game, drawing circles on the grown and putting different points into the circles.  Will the biggest circle or the smallest one be worth more?  Take turns throwing objects into the circles and add up your points.
